The Russian Gnesins Academy of Music

The Russian Gnesins Academy of Music is one of the leading state higher educational music institutions in Russia. It is located in Moscow.

It was founded in 1895 as a private music school by outstanding musicians and teachers, the Gnesins. Being committed to succession in education, the family createdan educational complex which involved children, teenagers and adults. An institution of higher learning (Academy at present) appeared in 1944. Mikhail Gnesin, a famous composer, set up the departments of composition and music theory. Prof. Elena Gnesina was the irreplaceable head of the musical institution for 72 years.

Having gone through some transformations, today the Gnesins musical institution includes the elementary music school, secondary music school, college of music, academy of music with postgraduate study.

The Academy has much broader range of music specialties than the Moscow Conservatory.

Folk singers and instrumentalists with their bayans and balalaikas, jazz and pop performers, sound producers and music managers, along with string, woodwind and brass performers, pianists, conductors, classical singers, composers can find their Alma Mater here. Today more than 1000 Russian and foreign students attend the Academy.

The Russian Gnesins Academy of Music awards Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in performing and teaching of classical music, pop, folk, jazz, etc. The Academy alumni create, perform, teach and produce different music and around music activities (journalism, management, etc.) in Russia and abroad.

Among graduates there are conductors Evgeny Svetlanov and Vladimir Fedoseev, trumpeter Timofei Dokschitzer, pianist Evgeny Kissin, bayan-player Yuri Kazakov, mezzo-soprano Zara Dolukhanova.
